Since 1977

A pioneer in reviving native grape varieties in the Avia Valley, Galician winegrower Arsenio Paz became one of the key figures in the resurgence and modernization of the Ribeiro Designation of Origin.

In the late 1970s, Arsenio and his wife, Chon Labrador, acquired a magical place: A Vilerma, a traditional estate where they dreamed of making “a little good Ribeiro wine for friends.”

His passion for rescuing traditional grape varieties soon led him to cultivate the vineyard professionally. He spent years observing each vine, studying and understanding it, immersing himself in a personal project dedicated to recovering Ribeiro’s heritage varieties.

With deep respect for the history and roots of this land, the Pariente family acquired A Vilerma in 2024, taking up Arsenio’s legacy — an inspiring project they continue to nurture day by day, with the ambition of elevating Ribeiro wines to the place they deserve, highlighting their terroir, their vineyards, and the revival of their native grapes.

Across the estate’s six hectares of vineyards, white varieties dominate, in keeping with Ribeiro’s historical tradition of blending treixadura, loureira, godello, albariño, lado and torrontés. In smaller proportions, red grapes such as brancellao, sousón, caíño tinto, ferrón and tempranillo are also present.

RIBEIRO

Ribeiro is shaped by three valleys carved by its three main rivers: the Miño, the Avia (home to A Vilerma), and the Arnoia. This landscape of slopes, terraces and stepped vineyards benefits from a unique microclimate.

The Avia Valley features a complex topography. Protected from the north by surrounding mountains and high plateaus, its west‑facing slopes provide ideal sunlight exposure and ventilation for the proper ripening of Ribeiro’s native varieties.

Thanks to the natural barriers that shield it from Atlantic storms, the valley enjoys a transitional oceanic‑Mediterranean climate — humid and mild, with a marked and beneficial annual temperature range, the lowest rainfall in Galicia, and dry conditions during the grape‑ripening season.

Ribeiro’s ancestral minifundio tradition has shaped its viticulture. Generations of inherited land divisions have created a mosaic of tiny terraced plots arranged in socalcos, set between 200 and 400 meters above sea level.
